Get into floral festivities this Christmas

The best flowers Cardiff has to offer, the most diverse flowers Fulham provides and the most exciting flowers in Manchester are bound to bring smiles to family homes around the country as people gear up for what is expected to be a very cold Christmas.

The festive period is only just around the corner and florists all over the country are already thinking about how they are going to spruce up their house and bring some floral warmth to their family throughout the winter months.

Interflora, the leading flower experts in the UK, are keen to bring the best flowers in the country to flower fans everywhere to enjoy the festivities in style. There is nothing better than a nice, lively and colourful display of flowers in the fire-heated living room when it is unbearably cold outside.

While the florist is preparing its Halloween displays to follow on from the success of last year, florists around the country are enlisting its help for their own displays. Such is the talent of the experts at Interflora that they create innovative displays for all kinds of events across the entire calendar.

Christmas, though, is undoubtedly one of their favourites as they love nothing more than bringing even more smiles to faces across the country. The poinsettia is the traditional flower that is used in the UK during the festive period. Its vivacious red petals will brighten up any room in the house, so you’ll never be left feeling anything less than Christmassy, no matter where you are in the house.

Florists grow poinsettias indoors in the run up to Christmas, but the foliage is particularly susceptible to damage from the cold weather, so bringing the flower home safely is the most crucial initial part of maintaining a poinsettia. It is important that you wrap the plant up before you leave the florist, either in paper or a plastic bag.

Despite the fact that they don’t like the cold, poinsettias blossom to their best away from sunshine but still in bright light. In fact, if it is looked after correctly, the poinsettia can blossom again the following Christmas, so you get even more warmth and delight from it than you might have bargained for!

3 Great Museums to Visit From Your Menorca Villas

Located near the larger Majorca, Menorca is the more subdued and elegant of these two Balearic Islands. Situated off the coast of the Iberian Peninsula, the island itself is Spanish but has cultural flair from all over the Mediterranean. This is evident in everything from the food and entertainment to the museums and history of the island.

One of the best ways to experience all that the island has to offer, is to stay in one of the Menorca villas that will lend your trip the relaxed feeling of holidaying at your own pace. While staying in a holiday villa is conducive to a lot of reading, snoozing in the sun and generally relaxing, the island also boasts several wonderful museums that are well worth a visit.

Museo de Menorca -Mahón. The Museo de Menorca is situated in the heart of the capital city of Maó, (Port Mahon) close to the main port – as well as just a short drive from many of the Menorca villas near the city centre. The museum itself is housed within the former cloister of a 15th century Franciscan convent, which was abandoned after 1835. It focuses on the history of the island, with artefacts and relics from prehistoric times, as well as collections from the Roman, Muslim, Byzantine, Arabic and Talayotic periods of the island’s history.

Municipal Museum of Ciutadella des Basticó de sa Font – Ciutadella. Ciutadella is on the western side of Menorca. Villas for holidaymakers here are a comfortable drive from the old city buildings, many of which were built in the 17th century. A short walk from the city centre takes you to the Municipal Museum, which is housed in a bastion originally built in 1677 to protect one of the entry gates into the city. Since 1995, these large limestone vaults have been used to showcase a permanent tour through the island’s history; even simple, everyday objects are on show to give you a feeling of what life was like on Menorca, up until 1287. Many of the objects are from recent excavations within the municipal district. There are many other constantly-changing temporary exhibitions that include themes on paleontology, archaeology, ethnography and general history.

Museo del Queso Hort de Sant Patrici (the Cheese Musuem of St. Patrick) – Ferreries. Wherever the Menorca villas you stay in are located, you will need transport to get to this small, specialist museum. It is located a kilometre out of the highest town on the island, Ferreries. The history of cheese making on the island dates back to the 5th century, and the family that runs this farm has renovated an old barn to create a museum that documents the history of the industry on the island. The museum offers artefacts, tools, and a chance to see how cheese is made, with a demonstration of the traditional processes. There are plenty of chances to taste-test the various cheeses with locally produced wine, or you can stock up and take a few samples back to your Menorca villas to enjoy for the remainder of your holiday.

Walking in the USA

For those who enjoy walking, USA tours to the northeast of the country offer plenty of historic walks in New England – an area with its own very special and unique heritage.

History

New England, as its name suggests, was the first part of the country to be permanently settled by the British. Groups of English Puritans, referred to as the Pilgrims, gradually took over the area from the indigenous peoples who inhabited it in 1607, following the granting of a Royal Charter for the land given by King James I. The Virginia companies of London and Plymouth set out to claim the land and build trade empires in the region. The wilder parts of today’s New England landscape will give visitors an idea of the potential that the early settlers might have seen in the land.

Putting down roots

The first colony, Jamestown, was established by the Virginia Company of London in 1607. Captain John Smith was perhaps the first foreign visitor to explore the area, both on horseback and walking. USA history shows that he travelled the entire region extensively before eventually christening it New England.

The colony of Jamestown met with mixed success, with disease and starvation amongst the harshest challenges faced by the settlers. In 1620 the Virginia Company of Plymouth established the Plymouth colony, in the area surveyed and named New Plymouth by Captain John Smith. The Plymouth Colony was more successful in the early years than Jamestown, and is famous as being the location where a treaty was established with Chief Massasoit, the leader of the Pokanoket people, which ensured the safety of the settlers.

The area was also the home of the origins of Thanksgiving – a festival celebrated every year by people in America. If, on your holiday, you need some rest from your strenuous walking, USA tradition dictates that if you are there on the 4th Thursday of November, you may well be lucky enough to be invited to share some turkey with celebrating locals!

New England today

From its colonial beginnings, New England has grown to be one of the most important regions of the modern United States. The famous universities of Harvard, Yale, Brown and Dartmouth College are all based in the area, as well as the world famous Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Because of the influence of its seats of learning and long history, the area plays a significant role in the culture of the USA. Walking through the stunning countryside of this region will be a highlight of any American holiday.

Walking in Crete – Discover Heraklion

If you like walking in the midst of history, legend and romance, without forgoing the hustle and bustle of modern life, you’ll love walking in Crete! The largest of the Greek islands and also the most highly-populated, Crete’s local culture-dialect – art and music – is distinct from general Greek culture, so it has its own unique charm. It’s definitely a must-stop place on your holiday in the Greek Isles. Where to start? Heraklion!

Your Doorway To Crete

The island capital, Heraklion (also called Iraklio or Candia) is an international port and a popular stop for cruises – making it the perfect setting-off point for a holiday walking in Crete. At first glance, what will greet you is a seemingly bustling, modern city- just what you’d expect of a major port- humming with activity, with scooters zipping up and down city streets. Go a little further (preferably with a guide or a guidebook) and you’ll find pretty much everything you could want to see – whether it’s shopping, culture, history or just great beaches.

Walk Backward In Time

One of the best reasons to go walking in Crete is the sense of experiencing life as it was in ancient times. The best place to learn a bit of the history is the huge Heraklion Archaeological Museum. This famous landmark, converted from an old power station, houses a massive collection of relics covering a period of time that spans around 5,500 years: from the Neolithic Period through Minoan, post Minoan and later periods – all sourced from Cretan archaeological sites such Knossos, Phaestos, Zakros and Archanes (Arhanes). It is best visited either early in the morning or late in the day to avoid the rush hour, especially in summer. If you have some spare time, you could also make a quick stop to the Battle of Crete Museum nearby.

The Palace of Knossos, five kilometres south-east (around 20-30 minutes) from the centre of Heraklion is another important stop when you go walking in Crete. Here, you will be able to see where King Minos (and his Minotaur!) is said to have lived, and from where Daedalus and his son Icarus took their tragic flight. Other sites you may want to visit in order to make the most out of Crete’s capital city are the Venetian Walls and the Loggia, Agios Minas, Koules Fortress and Transanades.

Say Hello to the Flora and Fauna

If you’d like to meet more of the denizens on your holiday walking in Crete, check out the Natural History Museum of Crete, where you will find great exhibits showcasing Cretan wildlife. Children will enjoy the area designed specially for them, complete with caves and other play materials. Don’t miss the earthquake- experience platform at the basement!

Another great place to visit if you’re on a holiday walking in Crete with children is the Thalassocosmos, a wonderful aquarium of tanks representing Cretan life under the sea. You can view almost 2500 specimens of Mediterranean marine species, including hunter sharks and beautiful jellyfish. There are some 50 viewing areas, while modern touch-screens provide additional facts in five languages.

Exploring the city of Heraklion is a wonderful starting point for your holiday. Walking in Crete can be so much more enjoyable if you know a little about the history of the island. Spending time in this fascinating city will enable you to better understand Crete and its culture.

4 Top Activities in Shanghai

Over recent years China has seen quite some growth as a travel destination with the city of Shanghai being just one of those popular destinations. Shanghai holidays offer a bewildering range of places to visit and this article looks at a few of the top must see locations while you’re staying in Shanghai.

1) The Yu Garden & Bazaar

The Yu Garden area makes for a fun day out and an intriguing area to explore. These beautiful gardens and streets have been created in a traditional Chinese style, featuring classical architecture and layouts. From the curve of the tiled building eaves to the traditional plants and water features of the gardens, this location truly makes it feel like you’ve landed in China. Delving deeper into the winding lanes and alleys you can find all sorts of little shops and you can follow that up with tea at the Huxingting Tea House.

2) Skyscrapers – A Top Down View

Nothing can give you a feel for a city quite like seeing it from above, and the Shanghai World Financial Centre provides this fantastic opportunity. At 101 floors its Shanghai’s tallest building and features many viewing platforms on the upper floors that afford a breath-taking view of the city below. If you’re looking for something a little cheaper though then next door is the 88 floor Jin Mao building, not quite the same view but you can enjoy the little café and bars in this building while soaking up the view.

3) The French Concession

The French Concession provides a sense of privacy, which can be in short supply in a city packed full of so many people, with its peaceful atmosphere and quiet streets. The lanes themselves are lined with beautiful French plane trees, some of which are well over 100 years old, and they feature a whole collection of little shops and picturesque houses that makes this area feel like a small neighbourhood in a big city.

4) Dongtai Road

Finally a trip to Shanghai city wouldn’t be complete without visiting the magical Dongtai Road. It’s a street packed with shops selling antiques and other small curios. The road features many shops selling the usual tourist tat but look a little deeper and you’ll find all sorts of lovely items, from art-deco lamps to Cultural Revolution memorabilia, from beautiful old books to tiny antique teapots there really is something for everyone.

Looking For Main Street

We pulled off the ramp to business loop 10, one of those stretches of frontage road that claim to take you through the quaint downtowns of off-ramp America. That’s what we were looking for I suppose; off-the-main-road-America. Main Street America, that place you’ll hear about from time to time, without specifics. What would have once been roadside Main Street but now is off main freeway.

With all the talk of Main Street and Wall Street somewhere in the back of my mind I thought they both existed. It turns out only one is real. Main Street is a dream and not a very good one. A myth of broken windows and abandoned stores. Cracked asphalt sprouting weeds, long stretches of gas station flanked desolation. Sometimes a diner survives, dirty and neglected. Populated by dirty and neglected guests, too tattooed or toothless, too hapless to realize they don’t exist anymore than their dirty neglected diner. The fire in the kitchen is a cold fire like the fire in their eyes, on the verge of flickering out.

Then I thought; was I seeing the people in the next booth, the sallow man, the woman with her tattooed pendulous breasts or just my own reflection in the mirror of my dreams, the longed for Main Street? The longed for business loop that could take me from the freeway and transport me backward. Was I longing for something I missed or only something I wished I missed? Was it all that great in the first place, this Main Street? If it was something real I was missing how did it get away, get so dirty and neglected? Why were all the bright lights now shining on the franchised collapse of my past? Why were the lights so cold, fluorescent and lifeless, the smiles airless, the eyes all around me flat, lips not quite closed, not quite parted?

The reporters, with their perfect skin, flawless, tattoo-less, lit by lights that imitate the sun, don’t live here or even travel here. They speak of places they’ve never seen, places they’ve never been, reading words they never thought of from screens below the camera’s eye. Talking of obesity and cigarette smoking and sob story puppy dogs, one-off miracles and lotto winners, of salvation and millionaires. Are they less shabby, less lifeless, I wonder. Am I?

5 Top Road Trip Games for Kids

Road Trip Game #1 – Eagle Eyes

This is a game of spotting items out of the car window that are listed on the sheet and counting their occurrences. Each player would a use 1 side of the car to look for the agreed items. The one with the most occurrences within a certain time period or distance is the winner. All you need is a pen and paper for each player. Items such as cows, horses, farm silos, tractors, churches, cemeteries, farm dams and road signs are good starters.

Variations - to add extra spice each child could try and predict how many of each item they will see within a certain distance or time frame. The closest to their prediction wins.

Road Trip Game #2 – Connect the Boxes

Each child will need a pen and paper. One player will draw a grid of dots (say 30 dots wide by 10 rows so that the width between the dots and the rows is about equal). Each player, in turns, then connects 2 dots with a horizontal or vertical line. The aim is to be the player that closes the 4th side to complete a box. The winner is the player who closes the most boxes. (Hint: If you close in 3 sides you can be pretty sure your opponent will quickly complete the box and add his/her initial in the centre.)

Road Trip Game #3 – Car Make / Model Reversii

This will have the whole car in fits of laughter…guaranteed! If you see a Cadillac Eldorado (for instance) whiz past, the players try and quickly say the make and model spelt BACKWARDS. So for this example the kids will be trying to say “Callidac” (Cadillac spelt backwards) and the pronunciation would be something like Call-i-dac. Then for the model Odarodle (Eldorado spelt backwards) they would try to say O-dar-odle. Once people are trying to say these words quickly it suddenly turns into a real laugh… you’ll remember this game for years. (I don’t know of anyone else who has played this game apart from our family – so you could say it’s exclusive.)

Road Trip Game #4 – Licence Plate Spotter

On a piece of paper each player writes all the letters of the alphabet A- Z. Then the idea is to find the first digit on the number plate to match each letter on your list. The first to find all the letters is the winner. (You could slow things down a little, making the game last longer, by choosing a certain color number plate or a certain state etc)

Road Trip Game #5 – I Spy

This works well for younger kids especially. Take turns to look for something the other player(s) has to guess correctly. You begin your turn by saying “I spy with my little eye something beginning with a (letter)_____”. The other player tries to guess it from the surrounding items or countryside. The person who correctly guesses gets to have the next turn.
